Book Review: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

How I heard about the book: How could I not have heard about this book. I am a huge TMI and ID fan.

Summary: This story picks up a little after where the first book in the series leaves off. We continue to follow Tessa Gray as she struggles to find out the truth of what she is. Mortmain is causing trouble and Charlotte is in danger of losing the Institute to a certain scheming Lightwood. Will is plagued with trying to find a solution to his curse and Jem begins to fall in love with Miss Gray as they investigate Mortmain’s whereabouts in hopes of keeping the Institute under Charlotte. Only thing is Mormain is always seems to be ten steps ahead of them.

My thoughts:

Good/Liked-

  • Characters- Cassandra Clare has always had a way with creating her characters to seem so real. You can relate and feel so close to a character that is an entirely different species. I actually enjoy the Infernal Devices more then The Mortal Instruments series and I think that is because Tessa is a much stronger and intelligent main character. I like to see that.
  • Plot- Love the entire era this story is set in. I love the idea of it all, and the story line is just fantastic. It has it’s twists and turns that keep you on your toes without being too hard to follow.
  • James [BAMF] Carstairs- What can I say, I’m a sucker for the underdogs of the story. I always have been. This particular love triangle was heart wrenching and well difficult, like all love triangles are I suppose. But Jem is just so wonderful and his character is so amiable. He is kind and yet we get to see a rougher side to him in this book. I loved that, I felt even closer to his character than before.

Bad/Disliked-

  • It takes a chapter or two to get your bearings and remember who’s who and everything that transpired in the previous book.
  • The Love Triangle- With all love triangles I see that it brings out the fickleness of the character that is caught in the middle. One night shes kissing one boy and the next she thinks shes in love with the other. I understand the confusion that goes on as well as not wanting to break hearts or hurt feelings but it always bothers me to see the un-decisiveness of it all. It kind of made me not like Tessa as much to be honest, which is sad because I really really loved her character.

Overall: Good book, but I felt it was sort of like a filler. Just something between the first book and the second, only due to the fact that not much got accomplished in terms of catching the antagonist and resolving all conflicts. And as with all of Cassie Clare’s books there is the cliffhanger ending that makes you want to jump into the black hole of emotions that is due to your feelings of despair.

*I read all of this book in one day because my sister loaned me her kindle while she was here visiting. It was the first book I read on an e-reader and to tell the truth I didn’t like it. I just prefer the printed word I suppose but I must agree that it is very handy when taking it places, not having to lug around a huge book.

Recommendations: I would recommend this series/book to those who love YA fiction and fantasy/ sci-fi novels..

Rating: I give this book a 4 out of 5.

I’m a little more than halfway done with Clockwork Prince.

TESSA YOU ARE A HUGE IDIOT AND HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO JEM. HE IS PERFECTION AND UGH I AM SWEARING OFF BOOKS WITH LOVE TRIANGLES AFTER THIS ONE.

Update: 5/20/12

Hello my wonderful fellow bookworms! I hope you all are doing well. Just a little update, my birthday was yesterday and I am now officially 20. Yikes, it feels weird. I also start working again this week. It’s a bittersweet thing. Hopefully I will have time to read at work. I also am debating on switching this little side blog over to a blog of it’s own. I’m not sure yet, only because of all the things I’ve posted and I’d probably have to move my reviews over. Which is kind of a bother. Meh. Along with that I am debating on changing the url as well. Any thoughts?

May your love for books continue to grow with every page turned.

Book Review: Red Moon Rising by Peter Moore

Red Moon Rising by Peter Moore

How I heard about the book: I actually stumbled upon it while browsing the YA section of my local library

Summary: High school is never easy, especially if you are a lycanthrope living in a world where vampires and humans look down on wulfs. Dante, or Danny as he prefers, is a half- vamp, half-wolf, just trying to get by. Of course things take a turn for the worse when his genetic treatments fail to suppress the wulf gene and he fears that he might have to go through the change. Can Danny find a way to stop it?

My thoughts:

Good/Liked-

  • Original- I can honestly say I have never read anything quite like this book. It follows classic monster lore rather well and is put perfectly into a modern society where vampyres coexist with humans. Wulfs are being shunned and struggling to have their rights heard. It is just a very good original idea.
  • Writing- I enjoyed Peter Moore’s writing a lot. The way he creatures this modern society and the usage of classic monster lore is really good.
  • Characters- Dante, although a lycan, is actually in a situation a lot of people might find relatable. Living with his mom and step father while going through a situation only his biological father, whom he is not on best terms with, can help. He is funny and humorous without completely killing a serious situation and the relationship between Dante and his best friend Claire is almost too perfect.

Bad/Disliked-

  • When you first begin reading there are some terms that throw you off. As well as getting a feel for the setting and type of place they live in. There is a glossary in the back of the book that has a list of terms and definitions. Unfortunately I didn’t find this out until I finished the story and was at the end of the book. Finding that out earlier could have probably saved me the bit of confusion.

Overall: I read all of this book in one evening. Yesterday evening actually. While it is one of those books that I just couldn’t put down, I didn’t find it to completely capture me the way some books do. It is a good read nonetheless.

Recommendations: I would recommend this book to teens on up.

Rating: I give this book a 4 out of 5.
